It’s kind of funny, you get so busy in life, sometimes you forget to celebrate your victories. As some of you know, I sit on the Board of Advisors for Marketer’s for Good, a non-profit organization that raises money for charity through our knowledge of marketing. I was an Executive Producer on the short video entitled, Jacob’s Turn. A story of a four year old boy with Down’s Syndrome and his burning desire to play little league baseball like every other kid in his small town in Indiana. At first everyone, except for Jacob, was fearful of how the other kids and parents would treat Jacob. Would they reject him? bully him? be mean? As it turns out in the heart warming story, Jacob ends up teaching everyone in town a lesson, and learns a few of his own.

Jacob’s Turn won an Emmy for Best Director in the Ohio Valley Region in 2011. How cool is that? The coolest part is that as more folks watch the video, the awareness of Down’s Syndrome continues to go up. Jacob is a blessing to his family. He has a disability but it makes him no less human or wonderful in my eyes. In some ways, it’s beautiful that he will likely maintain his childlike wonder and innocence for the rest of his life. Sometimes I wish my young children would stay that way forever! If you’d like to watch the video, I promise it will cause you to well up. It’s that good. Visit it at http://jacobsturn.com

This is a project that I’m really proud of. I sit on the board of directors for a charity called Marketers For Good. I’m an Executive Producer on this video and it looks like it will be getting an Emmy nomination.

This video is about a little boy named Jacob who lives in Indiana. He was born with Down’s Syndrome and wanted to play baseball just like the other 4 year old boys in the community. Watch the video to hear his story and how he changed a community.

My family and I just got back from a fantastic 8-day cruise in the Caribbean. We experienced the exotic and bucolic beauty of the Islands as we sailed azure seas and played in the sunshine. We had an absolute blast! I also had the extreme pleasure of meeting with some of the most successful business minds in the country. We shared marketing and business idea’s and gleaned invaluable insight from each other. I was inspired by all of the creative input surrounding me and more determined than ever to realize my vision to help as many lawyers as I can achieve this level of success! If I can live this dream life, so can you!

I made this short video sharing some the experiences that I’ve had with goal setting. Legal Marketing isn’t the be all end all to a lawyer’s happiness. As much as we don’t want to hear it, a lot of it is about mindset and resolving to think about our goals and then setting out to accomplish them.

legal marketingLegal Marketing can be full of pitfalls, many mistakes are possible so beware. Just the other day, 73,000 blogs on a free blogging platform called Blogetry.com were shut down by the U.S. Justice Department. That’s 73,000 blogs in one fell swoop! It’s alleged that many were committing copyright infringement of one type or the other. I’m sure that some innocent bloggers were caught up in the situation and lost all of their content. What’s the point you ask?

[raw]Well…if you are one of the attorney marketers, or an expert in

I did a couple webinars yesterday and they went great. Attendance was unbelievable. I never imagined we would have that type of turn out. The funniest thing happened during the evening webinar though. It was actually very sad. One lawyer decided to post a number of “questions” that were unbelievably rude, unprofessional and demeaning. When I say “demeaning” I mean he demeaned himself by using such coarse, abusive language. In my opinion, one of two things was going on with him. One, he’s experiencing extreme pain of some sort. Most likely, due to being unfulfilled professionally OR two, he thinks he knows it all and can’t possibly learn from someone else. Either position is not one that you want to find yourself in.

It’s hard to say but assuming he’s feeling unfulfilled professionally, it’s likely that he hasn’t taken charge of his life and his practice. What I mean by that is that he hasn’t really given it the time that it deserves. I imagine that he has never mapped out what he wants in life and then mapped out a plan to accomplish those goals. No, most likely, he’s sliding by figuring it out as he’s going. And I think that’s sad. We can all control some aspect of our destiny. My philosophy is if you plan on being on the planet, you might as well be working on creating the life you want instead of letting life determine what it is you get out of it.

If the “gentleman” was actually acting out of an assumption that he knew it all that’s pretty sad as well. We can all learn from each other. In fact, I was on the phone today with a lawyer friend of mine whose firm does about 12 times the revenues (not to mention the profits) of mine. They have over 75 employees and are on track to make about $12 million this year. But there was one thing that I have learned on my own recently that I shared with him, and he’s going to get it implemented right away. I dare say, the rude guy on the phone isn’t making $12 mill a year yet he thinks he knows it all.

The purpose of this post isn’t to bring up a negative, quite the contrary, it’s to illustrate that we do have some control over our destiny and none of us knows it all.

Hope to see you all on a future webinar. Even the poor guy with the bad attitude. ;-)

As you may know, we have free webinar scheduled for tomorrow, June 24 at 2pm and 8 pm Eastern time. In this short video I have a message about the webinar and some hints as to what its all about. This video lets you peek behind the curtain at me and my operation. I’ve never before publicly shown how I really am at the office or even what my “real” office looks like. You may think you’ve seen it but you haven’t. There’s a lesson there….maybe you can point it out to me on the webinar. Hope to see you there. Take care,

Darrin

I’m very excited today because I’m embarking on a dream that I’ve had for quite some time. As an accomplished lawyer marketing expert myself, I will finally have a legitimate outlet for sharing some of this life changing information with the bar. I will be launching the first internet television show devoted exclusively to lawyer marketing, attorney marketing, law firm marketing, practice management and wealth creation for lawyers. (had to get those keywords in so you could find this article) ;-)

Today, I will be setting up a video studio in the Winner’s Circle Mastermind mansion in Avila (Tampa), Florida. The mansion is one of those mind-blowing residences that you only see in movies. It’s 38,000 square feet!! Currently it’s the largest home in Florida (although a larger residence is currently under construction in the Orlando area). The “guest” house for this place is over 11, 000 square feet. Wow! I do have to admit that that’s bigger than the house I live in.  One last fact about the mansion is that there is a full size basketball gym in the house…..on the second floor. This place is massive, opulent and…..just really cool to have access to.

Back to the video shoot. We will begin shooting episodes of LawyersSecret.TV – I will be showcasing the relationships that I have with brilliant minds in the areas of business, marketing and entrepreneurship. I’ve been learning, helping, and hanging around with these types of people for years now but I’ve been sort of keeping them to myself. Almost like if any other lawyers knew how much I was learning from these guys that I would have more competition. I’ve come to realize that that’s just wrong thinking. There’s plenty of money in this world, plenty of abundance. The world rewards value. And value is what LawyersSecret.TV will bring to attorneys all around the country. Every episode will have at least one idea that if immediately implemented into your practice will make you more money, allow you more time or both. It  will be that good. I promise.

The concept of this show is that there are secrets outside of the profession of law that have been kept from us. We don’t know what we don’t know because we don’t run our firms like businesses. Hint….I have for many years now which is why I have the time and money to explore other passions and other fun endeavors like this one. And in no holds barred conversations, my friends and I will help you uncover the secrets one at a time.

What will the cost be to look over my shoulder at my previously confidential conversations? Zero, zilch, nada, FREE! I’m all about bringing value into the world and helping as many lawyers as I possibly can.

Stay tuned and keep your eyes open for the first episodes. There will be a podcast as well in order to allow you to watch in any way you would like. That’s another small hint, when you have a message, make sure that it can be consumed in as many different formats as possible. You just want to make sure your audience gets your message.

I found out today that an old friend of mine (a lawyer) died. He committed suicide. It’s bad enough when at age 43 your friends begin to die of natural causes but when someone commits suicide it hurts particularly badly. It’s so wasteful…and so final.

I couldn’t help but imagine the reasons that he might have done it. He was a criminal defense lawyer, in fact that’s how we met, we both worked at the Public Defender’s office in Tampa close to 20 years ago. He was a bit of a mentor for me as he was an old hand in the felony division when I was finally promoted. An old hand means he was probably there six months to a year before I was but he was an absolute warrior in the courtroom.  A real stud. He taught me (and many others) not to roll over on your clients or take the easy way out. Even criminal defendants deserve representation. Force the state to prove their case, he would always say. I learned many things from him before I finally moved on to private practice.

He eventually went out into private practice as well. Several years after I did. But private practice is a whole different animal. Out in the wild you have to eat what you kill. Administrative tasks become as important or more important than your legal ability. Indeed, if you want to become successful than a more than passing interest in attorney marketing is necessary. Looking back, I can see remnants of his attempts at lawyer marketing online. They will likely be there for years to come, sort of a sad testimony to his law practice. (I don’t mean he was sad, just it’s sad that those bits are around and he’s not.)

I feel particularly bad because it’s very likely that financial challenges at least contributed to his feelings of hopelessness. Had I known, I would have moved heaven and earth to help him in his practice. But I don’t have that opportunity any longer. Would a steady lead flow of new prospects kept him from feeling despondent, lonely and hopeless? I don’t know….. but I wish I would have been able to try to help him.

There is no marketing message in this post. Just the remembering a lost friend.
